A Study of the Influence of Working Conditions and Organizational Climate on the Professional Identity of Elder Care Workers

Abstract
This study aims to explore the organizational and environmental conditions that can enhance the professional identity of elder care workers. Specifically, it examines their working conditions and organizational climate in the context of their employing human service organizations. In order to address the purpose of the study, multiple regression analysis was conducted with a sample of 251 elder care workers in Daejeon metropolitan area. The main results are summarized as follows£ºFirst, the general level of the monetary reward of the elder care workers was showed low, but their levels of perceived task and duty were relatively higher. Second, while the their perceived levels of support from the employing organization`s physical environment and improvement for professional speciality were low, the colleagueship of the elder care workers was showed strong. Third, the elder care workers revealed their strong self-esteem for providing public services and pride in professional mission as a worker. Finally, the study explored the key facilitators and barriers of professional identity for the elder care worker. While role ambiguity, workload, colleagueship, and job clarity were identified as key facilitators of professional identity. Based on the above results, further implications for improvement of elder care worker`s professional identity were also discussed.
